  1. In Chinese history, the 10,000 km/6,000 mi
  2. trek undertaken 1934-35 by Mao Zedong and his
  3. Communist forces from SE to NW China, under
  4. harassment from the Nationalist army. Some
  5. 100,000 Communists left Jiangxi, Mao's first
  6. headquarters, in Oct 1934 and only 8,000
  7. lasted the journey to arrive about a year
  8. later in Shanxi, which became their new base.
  9. The march cemented Mao Zedong's control of
  10. the movement. The New Long March is China's
  11. plan to achieve world leadership in science
  12. and technology by the year 2000.
