In Chinese history, the 10,000 km/6,000 mi
trek undertaken 1934-35 by Mao Zedong and his
Communist forces from SE to NW China, under
harassment from the Nationalist army. Some
100,000 Communists left Jiangxi, Mao's first
headquarters, in Oct 1934 and only 8,000
lasted the journey to arrive about a year
later in Shanxi, which became their new base.
The march cemented Mao Zedong's control of
the movement. The New Long March is China's
plan to achieve world leadership in science
and technology by the year 2000.
